Here’s the story
Last February, a majority of Kaiser professionals filed for an election with the National Labor Relations Board so we could vote to join NUHW. We did that because we wanted our union back. SEIU had imposed a trusteeship and eliminated all membership rights and structure.
As professionals, we wanted to continue to call the shots in our union, and work together to protect our wages and benefits instead of having out-of-touch union officials from Washington DC to make decisions for us.
But what about SEIU?
We know SEIU doesn’t want us to leave. We’re some of the highest-paid union members at Kaiser, and we pay the most dues. Our strength has led the way in making Kaiser a better place to work. Over the years we’ve sent millions of dollars to SEIU in Washington, D.C., for nothing in return. Instead of working to improve our contract, SEIU’s national strategy for workers like us is to trade away our jobs, wages, and benefits in exchange for deals with management to get more members and help SEIU stay in control.
SEIU’s is trying to hang onto Kaiser professionals and our dues by using cheap scare tactics. They want us to think we’re helpless without outsiders from Washington, D.C. to protect us.
In NUHW, we’ll protect wages and benefits
Joining NUHW will protect the wages and benefits we fought to win and will guarantee our autonomy as a professional chapter with our own chapter officers. When we change unions, all of the terms of our contract stay in place while we negotiate for improvements. With NUHW, we’ll have the same professional experienced negotiators on our side who won what we have now. And we’ll have the confidence of knowing that our union won’t make secret deals with Kaiser. We’ll get to vote on all agreements with our employer.
