NUHW RNs at Kaiser make more progress on staffing issues

Leila Valdivia, RN, Kaiser LAMC“We’ve gotten more done with NUHW and Kaiser in 2 months than we ever got done with SEIU and the LMP in the last 2 years.”

On March 25, 2010, NUHW Stewards from Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center met with Debra Grant, Chief Nursing Executive, and received concrete commitments to improve and meet staffing guidelines in the Medical Center, including the use of travelers and overtime to do so. Among the improvements:

    • 122 new RN positions will be posted.
    • 7 Certified Nursing Assistant positions will be posted.
    • 42 Monitor Tech Positions Will Be Posted.

Shortly before the election in which RNs voted overwhelmingly to leave SEIU and join NUHW, SEIU had agreed to layoffs that would have severely impacted patient care.  Now, with a stronger, democratic voice at work, nurses are moving forward to address the issues that SEIU had ignored.
